I’m being UnReasonable! Thursday, Feb 18 2010

I listened to my mentor today talk about being unreasonable…. NOT ridiculous but unreasonable.  It’s like doing hard things. Setting the standard then finding a way to meet it.

When I was younger, I was very unreasonable. I was a C- student who went to college. It’s unreasonable for a C- student to go to college but I didn’t worry about that. I wanted to go and found a place that would take a C- student and I went. When I was in high school, we had an exchange trip. 30 students from my high school got to go for a week to a school in another part of the country and go to high school there and then we hosted the students that hosted us. C- students didn’t get chosen to do this… it was all A and B students but I didn’t care. I wanted to go and I was unreasonable until I got myself selected to go and loved it.

One spring break while I was in college, I had a friend who had a $200.00 ticket to England and she offered to sell it to me. I wanted to go! I didn’t have $200.00 but that didn’t stop me. My family didn’t have a whole lot of money. I had just paid for a ticket that winter break to go to England. I could barely make the money to pay for college and supplies. That didn’t stop me. I was unreasonable and was determined. I asked around for ideas. I knew I didn’t know anyone who could lend me $200.00  or 2 people who could lend me $100.00 bucks…. but what my friends pointed out to me was that I knew 200 people who could give me $1. So, I was unreasonable and asked 200 people for a dollar. In the end I got $225.00

Back then I was relentless. So when I heard my mentor talk about being unreasonable I had to take a trip back in time. (more…)

How my daughters raised money for the Haiti Earthquake by leveraging Monday, Feb 1 2010

I am very proud of my daughters who raised some money for Haiti. Hally is 11 and Ashlyn is 14. Their youth leader from their youth group at church challenged the 30 kids to raise $1000 total for the whole group. This is an amount that all the kids agreed to.

Lots of kids had different ideas on how to raise the money. One of my daughters got a can and took it to school and collected from students and staff and she raised $40.oo, that is a great amount from collecting for 3 days. My other daughter raised over $1100. Here is what she did…

How did the FSU Seminoles beat the WVa Mountaineers in the Gator Bowl? Tuesday, Jan 5 2010

Bobby Bowden has been the coach for the Florida State Football team since 1976. He started coaching the season before my family moved from Tallahassee to South GA. My dad was finishing his senior year at FSU when Bobby came along (they are almost the same age).

Although my dad doesn’t like football, the rest of my family enjoys it. (more…)

What I need Friday, Oct 23 2009

I was the 5th child born in a family with 6 kids. I was the youngest girl. In my years growing up, my older brothers and sisters always told me what to do and how to do it. I always felt resentful because I felt like they thought I didn’t know how to do anything and in my mind, that converted to feelings of being stupid.

Kaizen Saturday, Oct 10 2009

Often times when you look at your life or work situation or anything else, you might get overwhelmed with the changes that need to take place. For example, when you decide you want to be more fit, you might join a gym and think that you will start going 4 days a week. How often does that work? Do you stick with it? Usually you go and are all gung ho, then something comes up and you miss a day… then you get home another day and just don’t feel like going and after a while you are done.

We think that we need to make massive changes to make massive improvement but find it difficult to do… but what if there were another way?

I got married 20 years ago today. Thursday, Sep 17 2009

On this day 20 years ago, I got married in Atlanta GA. Downtown. The church I got married in was later condemned, torn down and made into a parking lot. It’s hard to believe it was that long ago.

Things with that marriage didn’t work out. Neither did things with the second husband… or the boyfriend after that. There is a definite theme going on here. (more…)

Can You Help Your Doctor? Thursday, Jun 11 2009

I write about my health to encourage others to take charge of their health care and to drive their own.

My grandma used to say “Doctors don’t know everything, they are just practicing”.

Why would anyone go to a Naturopath? Saturday, May 30 2009

I am friends with a lot of very conservative people. Some have even seen natural medicine as being from the devil or bordering on dabbling in witchcraft. I have other friends who have just always trusted MDs because that’s what they grew up with and that’s who they just go to.
